A Review by Peter Eeles - 25th November 2019
It is very unusual for these pages to include a review of the second edition of a book (click here to read a review of the first edition), but we make an exception for a modern-day classic, for Paul Brock's latest masterpiece is such a work. As one would expect, the production of this book is of the same high quality that we have come to expect from Pisces Publications.
Unsurprisingly, all of the plaudits paid to the first edition (including my own) apply equally here. And while it is obvious that those considering a purchase should get the new edition, why would those of us that already own the book consider an 'upgrade'?
In a nutshell, this new edition has several important enhancements:
- Around 100 new species have been added and the book is 16 pages longer as a result.
- There are many new and improved images.
- Species names have been aligned with 'common nomenclature' where appropriate.
- Distribution maps have been updated.
- The book remains portable enough to take into the field.
This astonishing work is, without doubt, the most comprehensive guide to the insects of Britain and Ireland around, and the sentiments I expressed in the first review still hold true: "This book is the best of its kind bar none and I can't recommend it highly enough. Every entomologist should have a copy".
